Grant and Jefferson counties in Arkansas are referred to as the Arkansas Timberland because these two counties represent the northernmost tip of the Piney Woods ecoregion of North America.

What is the Piney Woods Ecoregion?

The Piney Woods is a North American ecoregion in the Southern United States that covers a total area of 54,400 square miles in Arkansas, western Louisiana, eastern Texas and a small area in southeastern Oklahoma.

Many species of pine dominate the area with a smattering of hardwoods, including hickory and several species of oak.

The Piney Woods ecoregion is unique among ecoregions of the United States because of its abundant rainfall, plentiful bodies of water and its verdant and diverse woodlands, all of which provide desirable homes for a wide range of wildlife, as well as a beautiful place to live.
